COVENTRY INDICATORS - SOCIAL & ECONOMIC
Unemployment Claimants
Having a job has a
significant effect on quality of life and can lead to better access to housing, food and
facilities. This indicator also includes people who have been unemployed for over one year
because the longer people are out of work, the harder it is to get a job. They will
generally have greater difficulty re-entering the workforce and therefore little
opportunity of improving their lifestyle.
Both unemployment and long term
unemployment have been falling in Coventry for the last five years. Long term unemployment
peaked to almost half of the total unemployment figure in 1994, but has since decreased to
less than one third in 1998.
