COVENTRY INDICATORS - ENVIRONMENTAL
Electricity Consumption
Electricity is
mainly produced by burning fossil fuels (coal, gas and oil), which contribute to global
warming and acid rain. The amount of electricity consumed is therefore an indicator of how
sustainable we are.
The average domestic and industrial user in
Coventry has increased its consumption by more than 5% between 1994/5 and 1997/8. This
increase is equivalent to every user in the city putting on an electric fire every day for
an additional 2 hours. Many organisations have plans to reduce electricity consumption or
are looking at using renewable energy in order to save money and to lower their carbon
dioxide emissions.
