COVENTRY INDICATORS - ENVIRONMENTAL
Air Quality
Poor air quality is linked
to health problems such as asthma and air quality can therefore be used to measure our
quality of life.
The main source of air pollution in towns
is from road traffic. The National Air Quality Strategy to improve air quality in the UK,
set standards for the control and reduction of the main air pollutants by the year 2005.
Local authorities are required to review and assess the air quality in their areas in
order to reach those standards.
Air quality is measured by the number of
days on which the standards are exceeded. At present, those standards are rarely exceeded.
However, more information is being collected from new equipment, which may provide a more
accurate picture in the future.
