Millennium Beacon To Be Lit In Coventry
BY
ANTONY HOPKER
Coventry
is to receive a special millennium flame to light a beacon in the
city as part of the party celebrations on New Year's Eve.
Drawn
from a beacon originally lit on New Years Eve 1999 by the Queen, the
Millennium flame will be presented to Coventry's Lord Mayor, Cllr
Sheila Collins, at a special ceremony on Friday.
The
flame will then be kept alight in the Council House and used to
light a beacon on New Year's Eve as part of a programme of
entertainment in the city centre.
The
exact location for the beacon has not yet been decided, but it is
expected to be somewhere near the Cathedral.
Coventry
is one of 32 towns and cities that have received funding from the
Millennium Commission. All of the towns will light beacons using
millennium flames on 31 December.
The
flame will be presented to the Lord Mayor by Millennium Fellow
Philip Albans and Bruno Peek from Beacon Millennium.
Philip
Alban, head teacher of Little Heath primary school, Foleshill has
been named as a Millennium Fellow after receiving a Millennium Award
to research primary religious education at Warwick University.
The
Lord Mayor will be accompanied by four schoolchildren who have won
the recent Geoffrey Robinson MP Christmas painting competition.
She
said:
"It's
great that Coventry is part of this national scheme to celebrate
New Year's Eve and it's wonderful that the competition winners
will be able to take part in the ceremony."
The
beacon lighting is part of a 13-hour long programme of free
entertainment in the city centre on New Year’s Eve, which includes
a set from the 2-Tone Collective, featuring original members from
the Selecter, The Specials and The Beat and a show from the LA
Doors.
Rae
Hoole, Head of Events for Coventry and Warwickshire Promotions said:
"The
funding from the Millennium Commission has once again helped
Coventry to put on what will be a fantastic family-friendly party
which is free to all."
The
Millennium Commission awarded £90,000 to Coventry to help finance
the celebrations. Other funding partners include Coventry City
Council and private sector sponsors.
The
celebrations are being produced by Coventry and Warwickshire
Promotions in association with the City Centre Company.
