BY
ANTONY HOPKER
The
night will be set on fire in Coventry at New Year’s Eve when the
LA Doors takes the city into 2001 as part of a bumper evening of
free entertainment.
THE LA DOORS
BREAK ON THROUGH TO THE OTHER SIDE
The
feeling of the hedonistic sixties will be recreated in Coventry city
centre on a stage over the fountain in the Precinct in a 13-hour
stint of entertainment.
An
authentic Doors gig atmosphere will be created using stage-effects,
including a 6ft Whiskey a Go Go' club sign.
Jim
Morrison look-alike Nigel Feist will sing all the Doors classics,
building up to the countdown to the New Year with 'Light my Fire'.
The
stage kicks off at noon with old-fashioned family entertainment from
The Belgrade Panto Showcase.
The
afternoon sees music from up-and-coming local rockers The Four
Kings, followed by the Phase One Steel Band, who will be bringing a
Caribbean flavour to some popular tunes, and then Coventry bhangra
star, Silinder Pardesi.
The
evening starts with 70s classics from Vinyl State. I’m Spartacus
will take their original sounds to the stage and will lead into good
time rock’n’roll covers band Gdansk, who will be playing some of
the best known rock tunes from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
Leamington-based
Souler Rhythm will get the crowd dancing with their funky rhythms
and impassioned vocals before handing over to the LA Doors at
11.15pm for the finale.
Rae
Hoole, Head of Events for event producers Coventry and Warwickshire
Promotions, said:
"The
diversity of music on the Fountain stage reflects the diversity of
music interests in the city and it will all be very lively,
up-beat and entertaining.
“The
LA Doors are a great live act and will be sure to see in the New
Year in style."
The
Fountain stage is one of five areas of city centre entertainment
planned for New Years Eve 2000.
The
13-hour long programme of free family entertainment includes a set
from the 2-Tone Collective, which includes original members from The
Selecter, The Specials and The Beat. It will be playing from 9pm to
11pm on a stage outside Coventry University in Priory Street.
The
celebrations are being produced by Coventry and Warwickshire
Promotions in association with the City Centre Company. Funding
partners are Coventry City Council and the Millennium Commission, as
well as sponsors from the private sector.
