Can anyone stop Borough winning the league? After this
performance it would be a brave person who came up with an alternative.
Gresley were in the top six going into this match, but the gulf in class between the
two teams was huge and Borough had little difficulty in maintaining their massive
seventeen points margin at the top.
The Derbyshire side, managed by former Nottingham Forest and Manchester United striker
Garry Birtles, impressed in only one short spell in the first half.
For the remainder, Brendan Phillips team looked every inch a championship winning
side. Anton Thomas gave them a lead just before the interval and within two minutes of the
restart they pressurised Rovers so fiercely that their defender John Faulkner put through
his own goal.
Thomas goals was a thunderous shot from fifteen yards from Steve
Prindivilles crossfield pass Ian Muir fired against a post before a near post flick
from Prindivilles corner kick brought the second goal.
Terry Angus was waiting to knock the ball in, but Faulkner, stretching to clear, scored
an own goal.
Borough made the game safe when Thomas was fouled in the penalty area in the 75th
minute and Muir netted the spot kick.
