Borough failed in their bid to make history by losing a scrappy
match by a single goal at Gloucester.
Borough needed to win to secure their seventh successive victory to equal their
previous best-ever start to a season.
But the spark was missing in the face of Gloucester's controlled aggression and even
the wind seemed to conspire against Nuneaton. It was blowing in their faces in the
difficult first half when they went a goal down, but it died away after the interval so
they had no advantage.
They came under heavy pressure from the first whistle and only a last ditch tackle from
Barry Williams prevented them falling behind in the third minute.
They conceded the goal which eventually settled the points in the 10th minute. Chris
Burns and Adie Mings combined to set up Chris Tucker and he beat Borough's goalkeeper
Richard Williams with a sharp shot from ten yards.
It was all hands to the pump for Borough with Richard Williams saving with his legs
from Tucker and the ball then being scrambled away in a goalmouth melee.
Nuneaton's only real effort came when Wayne Simpson's curling cross was mishandled by
Gloucester's 'keeper Steve Mokler but from Anton Thomas' head-down, Maclolm Christie could
get no power in his shot and it was cleared by defender Gary Thorne.
Borough were more in the match in the second half but could not find a way through to
grab an equaliser and to make matters worse they lost Barry Williams with a leg injury. It
was the first time this season that Borough failed to find the net.
