NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL NEWS
Nuneaton Borough (2) 4
Burton Albion (1) 1
[DR MARTENS PREMIER DIVISION]Nuneaton Borough continued their unstoppable run of form with a
goal glut against their old foes Burton Albion. It was Borough's sixth successive victory
of the new season and gives them a five points cushion at the top of Dr Martens League
Premier Division.
More than 2,000 fans crammed into Manor Park Ground
for a feast of football from the local rivals. Borough skated into a 2-0 lead only for
Burton to narrow the margin and then cause a couple of frights before the home team got
back on track.
Burton had no answer to Nuneaton's goal poachers Anton
Thomas and Malcolm Christie who grabbed two goals each. Christie now has seven goals from
six games and his strike partner Thomas has four to make them the deadliest duo in the
league.
Nuneaton began at a rate of knots and their early pressure
brought its reward in the 16th minute. Dicky Gardner robbed an Albion player on halfway
and fed Thomas. He swapped passes with Christie before crashing an angled drive into the
Burton net.
Boro fans celebrated again in the 40th minute when Thomas
pressured Albion's goalkeeper Nick Goodwin into dropping the ball on the edge of his area.
Christie made him pay with a lob into the gaping net.
But Nuneaton's celebrations were hardly over when Burton
struck back when Steve Spooner's centre was delicately glanced home by Andy Garner.
Borough appeared to be knocked out of their stride and
Gardner headed off the goalline from Brendan Hackett, while goalkeeper Richard Williams
produced a top class double save from Richard Cotterill to prevent an equaliser.
But Nuneaton tightened their game and scored their third
goal when Thomas squared the ball for Christie to rifle home. Then with six minutes to
play Barry Williams' rounded off his team's stunning display with a neat through ball
which gave Thomas a clear run to score with shot from 15 yards.
