[03 NOV 98] WARWICKSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
Buy Recycled

Everyone knows that recycling your household waste helps the environment by saving natural resources and reducing the amount of waste for disposal. But do people make a conscious effort to support recycling activity by purchasing products made from recycled material?

The Buy Recycled Campaign is launched today (3 November) by LARAC and is supported by all local authorities across Britain. It aims to increase public awareness of recycled products and packaging and encourage greater recycling activity.

Jack Lindsey from Warwickshire County Council said

"All materials deposited at local recycling facilities are collected and recycled to make new products. Buying products and packaging with recycled content is an ideal way to support recycling activity by creating a market demand for more recycling."

Using waste collected though recycling schemes in the manufacture of new products not only saves raw materials but by recycling and buying recycling products we can reduce the amount of rubbish which is currently sent to Landfill.

Jack added

"I would encourage people to support the Buy Recycled Campaign by recycling their household waste and buying recycled products. You will be pleasantly surprised how many quality items are now being made from recycled material."

The Buy Recycled Campaign is just part of Warwickshire’s Wasteline initiative which has been developed by the County Council in partnership with BFI, Warwickshire Wildlife Trust and local District And Borough councils.

Notes

  • National Retailers giving support to the Campaign are: Asda, Safeway, Sainsburys and Waitrose.
  • LARAC is the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee, the national organisation of Local Authority Recycling Officers throughout the UK.
