MP Christine Oddy will give Labour Party members in North Warwickshire an update on issues
in the European Parliament when she visits the Atherstone branch on Wednesday (9
December).
Among topics the Coventry and North Warwickshire MEP will be covering will be the
future of European funding from which Atherstone has benefited in recent years and which
is now under review.
Other issues will include the Common Agricultural Policy and the prospects for Britain
joining the majority of member states in the Single Currency. But the meeting will be very
much a two-way process with members telling Ms Oddy how they feel about a range of
European and other current issues.
She said:
"Atherstone has seen real benefits from Britain's membership of the European Union
with the town benefiting from grants. Now people locally are concerned that the changes
which will take place as part of Agenda 2000 may see this assistance coming to an end.
When decisions are made in Brussels and Strasbourg it is vital to know what people in
places like Atherstone think. Meetings like this are an excellent way of finding that out
directly from the people concerned."
