BIOGRAPHY
MEP for Midlands Central 1989-94 and for Coventry and North
Warwickshire from June 1994.
Born in Coventry on 20 September
1955 and attended Gosford Green, Ravensdale and Stoke Park Schools. Graduated in law from
London University, was awarded a Belgian Government Scholarship and gained a Masters
Degree in European Law at Brussels University. Also has an MSc in Economics from
Birkbeck College. Trained at the European Commission as a stagiaire. A qualified
solicitor, Christine lectured in law at City of London Polytechnic (now London Guildhall
University).
Labour Group spokesperson for Legal
Affairs, also member of Social Affairs and Women's Rights Committees and Central America
Delegation. Rapporteur for European Company Statute and Worker Participation Directive,
Intellectual Property Directive and Draftsperson on Pension Law Directive.
Corapporteur on a petition to the European Parliament concerning greater rights for the
old and sick in hospitals. Leader of Human Rights Delegation to Sri Lanka.
Treasurer for the European Parliamentary Labour Party (EPLP) and Secretary to the EPLP's
Working Group Against Racism. Convenor of the West Midlands Group of Labour MEPs.
Member of MSF and the TGWU.
Associate Fellow of Department of Sociology at University of Warwick, Fellow of the Royal
Society of Arts and member of the Royal Institute of International Affairs. Member of the
Haldane Society. Member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of
Discrimination and the Law. Honorary Fellow of Professional Business and Technical
Management.
Languages: French, Spanish, German.
Interests: employment and trade union law, EC and
comparative law, rights for disabled and older people, pensions, economics, Sri Lanka.
Others interests: wine tasting, art, travel, theatre and cinema.
