Coventry could soon become a
regular host to top class international boxing.
The city's new £7 million SkyDome
Arena won wide praise for its hosting of last month's British
light-heavyweight title fight won by Coventry's Neil Simpson.
The bill was shown live on Sky
TV and now Planet Ice, who operate the arena, are in talks with
several of the country's leading promoters.
Simon Burnett, manager of the
SkyDome Arena, said the reaction to the first bill had been
incredible.
"We knew the evening
would sell well because Coventry has long been a boxing city and
there were local fighters on the bill, but the feedback from around
the country has been very exciting.
"We have been contacted
by three or four of the leading promoters who are very keen to host
top international bills here in Coventry. They have been impressed
by the facilities for spectators and television companies and the
venue is just the right size for that level of boxing.
"There is an
established circuit for boxing but we offer something purpose built
and fresh and that seems to have caught their imagination.
"We are hoping that we
will soon be hosting some European and possibly world title fights.
"Sky
were delighted with the way we hosted last month's event and I know
that promoter Jess Harding was similarly impressed."
