A new
pub set to open in Coventry has become one of the first in the city to declare that it
will not be opening on Millennium night.
JD Wetherspoon will open the Flying Standard in Trinity Street on 29
September, but management of the company have revealed that the whole Wetherspoon chain
will close at 8.30pm on New Years Eve.
A spokesman said:
"We have decided to close the entire chain at that time to allow our staff to be
with family and friends on what will be a very special occasion."
The Flying Standard will be situated in what was previously H Samuels Jewellers
and a company spokesman said they were delighted with the acquisition.
He said:
"We have been looking for a suitable site in Coventry for several years but there
has been nothing around that fits our company profile.
"We have pubs in Leamington Spa and Birmingham but nothing in Coventry which is a
situation we have always been keen to rectify.
"We were delighted when this building came up because it is a listed building and
has a lot of character, which is absolutely ideal for us."
The new venue was given its name after members of the Standard Triumph appreciation
group approached Wetherspoons asking for the car model which was manufactured
in Coventry to be used as the title.
The pub chain was already looking for a name with a Coventry connection, and was
delighted to use the idea.
A spokesman said:
"This is a Coventry pub and Standard Triumph has a huge link to the city. We are
hoping that the appreciation group will supply us with memorabilia and photos to use as
décor."
The J D Wetherspoon pub will operate in the same way as the rest of the chain with a no
music policy, designated no smoking areas and food served all day.
