Jazz In Strange Places Wins Arts Cash
Coventry's
Jazz Festival has received a major cash boost, after winning a
grant from West Midlands Arts for an imaginative approach to the
music.
It’s
the first time that an event in the city organised by Coventry
and Warwickshire Promotions has been given money by the body.
The
use of buildings such as Holy Trinity church and St Mary’s
appealed to the Arts Board, as did the breadth of the programme
over the course of the five-day festival, which starts on 24
August.
And
the use of the Belgrade Theatre for some of the bigger concerts,
such as legend McCoy Tyner was also applauded.
The
£8,000 award was also made because of the educational content
of free workshops, which are being held to encourage young
musicians to develop an interest and skills in jazz.
West
Midlands Arts Music Officer Val Birchall said:
"West
Midlands Arts welcomes this initiative to target more young
people to attend the festival and was particularly interested
in the strategy of using venues which do not normally host
arts events in this context".
The
award compliments principal sponsorship from Marconi and support
from Jaguar and Pizza Express.
