Jazz Supremo Signed Up For Festival
A
composer, band leader and soloist widely recognised as Britain’s
foremost jazz artist is to headline the Coventry Jazz Festival in
August.
Saxophonist
Andy Sheppard brings his Learning to Wave band to the Belgrade Theatre
on the evening of Saturday, August 26 for one of the major concerts of
the five-day festival.
Sheppard’s
range of work covers many fields.
He
has performed all over the world, collaborating with artists as
diverse as John Martyn, Nigel Kennedy, Carla Bley, Gil Evans, Elvis
Costello and dub poet Benjamin Zephaniah.
He’s
written original music for live theatre and for television, including
documentary series on actor Peter sellers and ice dancers Torvill and
Dean.
His
Learning to Wave band features top keyboard player Steve Lodder. They
will be playing music from their second album Dancing Man and Woman,
which is premiered this month.
Andy
Sheppard is the first confirmed booking for this years Coventry Jazz
festival, which runs from 24-28 August at a number of city centre
venues.
For
the second year the festival is being co-ordinated by Coventry and
Warwickshire Promotions, working with local jazz promoters.
Highlights
of the 1999 festival included Georgie Fame and the legendary Jimmy
Smith.

Marriott, who chairs the organising committee, said:
“Andy
Sheppard is Britain’s biggest selling jazz artist. This is a
prestige venue and we’re delighted to be putting him on at the
Belgrade.”
