[12 SEP 98] RUGBY
LIONS MATCH SUMMARY
Orrell (7) 32 Rugby Lions (3) 3
[ALLIED DUNBAR PREMIERSHIP
TWO]The Lions
buckled in the last ten minutes of this hard fought match. At that stage they were losing
15-3 and still in with a slim chance of turning the game around.
But the floodgates opened and they conceded another
seventeen points.
They were not helped by a puzzling refereeing decision
however. When Orrell's forwards drove from a lineout wide out on the right, Rugby's
forwards collapsed and the referee amazed everyone by awarding a penalty try under the
posts which Simon Verbickas converted.
Then in injury time Matt Oliver outwitted Lions' defence to
score a try which Verbickas again converted.
But Lions could have no complaints about losing at Edge
Half Road. They took the lead in the 20th minute when Orrell were caught offside and
Denzil Evans kicked the penalty goal.
But Orrell began to apply a lot of pressure and Verbickas
converted Neil Liptrot's try in the 37th minute.
Verbickas extended Orrell's lead with a penalty goal midway
through the second half, Ian Wynn scored an unconverted try and then came the late
tryscoring flurry.
