Rugby Lions (5) 18 Blackheath (6) 12
[ALLIED DUNBAR PREMIERSHIP TWO]The Lions fought back from a half time deficit to build a commanding
twelve point lead but then they ran out of steam and had to battle to hold on for victory.
The difference between the sides in the first half was the
goalkicking. Blackheath's Campbell Aitken kicked two penalties from four attempts, but
Lions' Denzil Evans and To'o Vaega missed four place kicks between them.
Jim Withers crashed over for a first half try for Lions
following a series of five metre scrummages, but Aitken's penalty goals saw Blackheath in
front at the interval.
Rugby solved the place-kicking problem in the second half
by sending on replacement Steve Hopkins for Dean Morgan at half-time. Hopkins struck two
penalty goals and then Dai Reece scored a fine try from a forward drive and Hopkins
converted brilliantly from the touchline.
But indiscipline almost let in Blackheath near the end.
They were awarded two penalties both of which Aitken landed and then Lions were left
hanging on a man short when Richard Kinsey was banished to the sin bin with ten minutes to
play.
