Coventry had to win to keep
on the tails of the championship leaders and they achieved that, but the performance was
short on inspiration.
In a match liberally punctuated by the referee's whistle. It took Coventry 20 minutes
to get into the match and they took the lead with virtually their first attack. Flanker
Derek Eves got the touchdown following a line out and Steve Gough converted with a
magnificent kick from the touchline.
But within two minutes the scores were level. Glen Wilson charged down Matt Gallagher's
clearance kick inside the 22 and won the race to touch down. Edwards converted.
Coventry began to believe they could pull away in the second half when inspired play by
scrum half Tony Dawson and Eves combined to send over Jason Minshull for the second try.
The Yorkshire club kicked a penalty goal as they tried to mount a rally, but Gough
sealed it for Coventry with two penalty goals.
