[02 MAY 99] COVENTRY
BEARS PRESS RELEASE
Coventry Bears RL 40
Birmingham Bulls RL 34Coventry Bears Rugby League continued their impressive run of
summer conference scalps, when the overcame the Birmingham Bulls at Coundon Rd on Sunday
night. This completed a trio of wins over local rivals which has also seen them defeat
both Worcester saints and Leicester Phoenix. A closely fought contest saw the Bears clinch
the victory in the final moments when the excellent Ben Shepherd powered through the
Birmingham defence from twenty metres to complete his hat-trick of tries.
This game quickly became a battle of the forwards, with
Coventrys Tony Wright, Alan Robinson and Colin Pereira proving to be too strong for
the opposition as they outfought them in both attack and defence, their hard work rewarded
when Wright rumbled his way over for a try in a thrilling second half.
South African, Alex Van Der Walt revelled in his role as scrum-half, a tough tackling
hard running performance earned praise from Spectators and his team-mates, a try late in
the first half, no more than he deserved for all his action game.
Other tries for Coventry were scored by Rob Lowe and James Cathcart, with Cathcart yet
again deadly with the boot.
The Bears next fixture is away at the St Albans
Centurions on 15 May. The next fixture at Coundon Road is on 23 May when they entertain
Stafford.
