[25 APR 99] COVENTRY
BEARS PRESS RELEASE
Coventry Bears RL (18) 66
Leicester Phoenix RL (10) 20Coventry Bears Rugby League launched their season of summer
friendlies at Coundon Road, with an emphatic 66 points to 20 win over Leicester Phoenix.
Leicester, one of the favourites to take this year's Rugby
League summer conference, got off to a great start, scoring within the first two minutes.
However this only succeeded in waking up the Coventry side,
who equalised within five minutes when the outstanding Danny Malin cut through the
Leicester defence to score the first of his hat-trick of tries.
Throughout the rest of the first half Coventry managed to
gain the upper hand thanks to tries from Nigel Kane and Ben Shepherd, taking the half-time
score to 18-10.
The second half saw any thoughts of a Leicester comeback
quickly banished as the Bears ran in try after try after try, including three full length
of the pitch efforts from Dan Price, Pieter Krige and that man Danny Malin. The ever
impressive James Cathcart was in top form with the boot as he successfully converted all
eleven tries.
The other tries came from Rob Lowe (2), Tony Wright and
Cathcart himself.
Local players, Jason Wetton, Kevin Morris and Ian Mills all
enjoyed solid debuts as Coventry players at Coundon Road.
The only downside to Coventry's win, was fullback Craig
Quick's shoulder injury in the first half. Craig, hero of last week's 40-15 win away at
Worcester, will be sorely missed over the next few games.
Fun was had by all who watched and joined in the with the
Bears mascot, face painting, music etc and we are looking forward to next Sunday's
encounter with local rivals the Birmingham Bulls - kick off 7.30pm at Coundon Road.
