Chartrand
Injured But Home Players Shine
Coventry
Blaze’s new dream trio has been broken up after just one game, but
five players have been given a chance to stake a claim for a place
in the Great Britain squad.
Team
lynchpin and captain Steve Chartrand has suffered a broken jaw had
to have a plate inserted in an operation yesterday.
A
replacement is being considered for the French Canadian, but Blaze
coach Paul Thompson is waiting to see the extent of his injuries.
If
he is likely to be back before the end of the season it is unlikely
that the side will be able to pay for another overseas player.
Meanwhile
five British players have been selected for the first 55 to take
part in a training camp for the Great Britain squad.
Shaun
Johnson, Marc Twaite, Tom Watkins, Michael Tasker and Michael
Knights, have been selected to the first training camp to be run by
Chris McSorley since he took up his post as head coach of the
national team.
The
training camp takes place at Hull during the first week in February
and will allow McSorley, and his assistant, the Blaze's Paul
Thompson, to run the rule over the brightest players that are
eligible to play for Great Britain.
Thompson
commented:
"I'm
very proud of the guys that have been selected - and so are they!
“These
five have been a huge factor behind where we as a hockey club are
right now, and they fully deserve their opportunity."
The
selections have forced the Blaze to rearrange one fixture due to the
clash with the training camp.
The
game against Hull Thunder, originally scheduled for Tuesday 6
February has been put back by 48 hours to Thursday 8 February. Not
only do the Blaze have five players at the camp, but the Thunder
have three there themselves.
This
weekend the Blaze will be hoping to overcome the disappointment of
losing the first leg of the ntl cup semi final 1-4 at Guildford,
when they take on Slough home and away. Sunday’s game against
Slough starts at 6pm at Coventry SkyDome.
