Atherstone slipped out of the F.A. Trophy through an injury time
goal after they had produced a magnificent display against the Conference side.
In fact United dominated the match for long periods and were unlucky not to get
something from a hard-fought cup-tie.
The sides had battled to a goalless draw at Sheepy Road on Saturday, and few gave
United any chance in the replay against the team from the higher league.
But they astounded watchers by carrying the fight to their opponents and went close to
scoring on several occasions before they fell behind in the 26th minute. A corner kick was
cleared only as far as the edge of the penalty area and Dave Thompson fired into the net
through the crowded goalmouth.
United had a strong claim for a penalty shortly before half-time when Leon Kelly was
sent sprawling but the referee ignored their appeals.
But they equalised four minutes into the second half when Scott Blair lashed his shot
into the roof of the net from Boyd Young's centre.
Danny Martin missed a glorious chance to give Atherstone a notable victory near the end
and the match looked like reaching extra-time when deep in injury time Brian Ross scored
Southport's winner.
