Donald Crashes Out In Agony
Warwickshire’s
overseas player Allan Donald faces a six-week lay off after colliding
with a fence as he chased a catch yesterday.
The
South African fast bowler had already set about Hampshire’s batsmen
in the National League game at Southampton.
With
figures of three wickets for just nine runs, he had already made a
huge contribution to the 97 run victory.
But
while in the field a slog by Australian star Shane Warne saw Donald
right up against the long on fence trying to complete the catch.
He
smashed into the advertising hoardings and crumpled to the ground in
agony.
Eyewitnesses
said that he lay still for several minutes without moving as players
and officials came to help.
Donald
was stretchered off the pitch and taken to hospital in an ambulance.
An
x-ray revealed that he had broken two ribs.
It
is estimated that he will miss the first six weeks of the
season-proper.
This
will include five championship games, starting with the
county's opening game in the new Division Two against Glamorgan at
Edgbaston on Wednesday.
Donald was named man of the match for
his efforts. Hampshire Hawks could only muster 118 all out in reply to
Warwickshire’s 215 for eight.
