Coventry boxer Neil Simpson
produced one of the most amazing comebacks modern boxing last night to
win the light heavyweight Commonwealth title in front of his home
crowd.
The 30-year-old was knocked
down three times in the opening round of his encounter against
Zimbabwean Hastings Rasani.
He then took another
eight-count in the second round before starting to his throw punches
at his rival in the third.
Rasani, who was put on the
bill instead of South African Soon Botes after the Commonwealth Boxing
Council ruled that the Zimbabwean had a greater claim to the fight,
then went down for an eight count himself.
He was then floored by
Simpson’s left hook and was counted out. He needed medical attention
before he could leave the ring.
The fight will be shown on
Grandstand on the BBC this weekend.
