Rugby athlete
Katherine Merry won a surprise bronze medal at the European Games in Budapest.
The young sprinter, who is now in the Linford Christie coaching stable, ran a 50.4
second leg in the Women's 4x400 relay on the last day of the Games to help Britain to
finish top of the medals table.
Katherine is now being tipped to move up to the individual 400 metres and her mentor
Christie said:
"I told her she would win a medal. I expect her to run the 200 and the 400 in
future. She has a very big career ahead of her."
The other members of the relay quarter were Donna Fraser, Vicky Jamison and Allison
Curbishley. Merry ran the crucial third leg and built up big lead over the fourth racer
before handing over the baton to Curbishley. Germany took the gold medal.
