Warwickshire chalked up a notable hat-trick when Great Britain announced its
team for the European Championships next month.
Coventry Godivas 100m sprint ace Marlon Devonish was selected for the
championships in Budapest despite his disappointing third spot in the BUPA AAA
Championships over the weekend.
Katharine Merry, who runs for Birchfield but is now based in Cardiff, was certain of
her selection after winning the 200m and according to mentor Linford Christie is now back
to her best after a few seasons of injury.
Andy Hart, who now represents Rugby AC after moving from Leamington C&AC was ruled
out of the weekend meet with injury but his performance in the European Cup, when he
finished third in a personal best, secured his place.
Other local athletes competing in Birmingham were: Steve Phillips (Rugby) third in the
long jump, Ellena Ruddock (Rugby) fifth in the 200m, Andy Drake (Coventry Race Walking
Club) third in the 10km walk, Emma Merry fifth in the discus and Noel Edwards (Leamington)
fifth in the 800m.
