Long jumper Jo Wise has
seen her chances of Olympic glory fade, by a single agonising
centimetre.
Nursing an injury to her
shin, she came an unlucky 13th in the qualifying round, and
missed out on a place in the final.
Wise, the Coventry
Godiva Harrier who claimed a Commonwealth gold two years ago,
managed to set a season’s best with a jump of 6.59m.
But it turned out to be
just too little.
She told the UK
Athletics website that she had only decided to compete three
days before the competition:
“I don’t
want to make excuses but I have had a lot of injury
problems."
Wise, who now lives in
Solihull, failed to make the Olympic qualifying distance in the
AAA trials, but was allowed into the team because her season had
been plagued by injury.
The 29-year-old said she was hoping
to put the disappointment behind her and set herself a target
for next year.
She said:
"Now
I want to have a good winter. And I want to come back next
year and win a medal at the Worlds to make up for all this.”
