Three Coventry athletes have
been chosen to represent the Great Britain team in the Sydney Olympics
next month.
Marlon Devonish, Andy Hart and
Jo Wise were all selected in the full athletics squad, which was
announced this morning.
Devonish was given the
discretionary third place in the 200m team after his performance at
the trials at the AAA championship on Sunday.
He will also be a key member
of the men’s 4x100m relay squad. Last year he was drafted into the
team at the last minute when Dwain Chambers suffered an injury, and
proved an invaluable link on the bend.
Devonish is the only member of
the Coventry Godiva Harriers club to have achieved the qualifying
standard.
But two others have been
selected for the team following good performances on Sunday.
Long jumper Jo Wise will be
Britain’s sole representative in the women’s long jump. She won
the AAA title in the final round on Sunday, but has been just short of
the qualifying standard this year.
And 800m runner Andy Hart will
also be in the squad after he narrowly missed out on victory on
Sunday. Again, he was below the standard, but showed promise with one
of his famous surging runs that the finish, despite being boxed in on
the last lap.
Katharine Merry, from
Dunchurch, who runs for Birchfield, has also been selected in the
women’s 400m, but there is no place for Jo Jennings-Steele of Rugby
in the high jump.
