Youngsters Show The Barnsley Way
Roland Nilsson will be hoping Sky
Blues under-19s have set the tone ahead of tomorrow’s trip to
Oakwell.
The senior youth team entertained
Barnsley at Ryton on Saturday morning and emerged with a
convincing 2-0 win over the Yorkshiremen.
Youth coach George Mackie said
the result had not really been in doubt from the opening
moments.
He said:
“We actually scored after 23
seconds. They kicked the game off but we won possession and
played the ball over the top. One of their players failed to
clear and David Pipe was able to run in from 35 yards and
score.
“We added the second after
six minutes when Brian Ford scored direct from a corner and
that really sealed the game.
“Everyone is hoping that is
the same result on Tuesday night when the two clubs meet at
senior level.”
The under-17s couldn’t match
their clubmates as they slumped to a 3-1 reverse against the
same opposition, also at home.
Barry Thornton brought City back
into it when he equalised but the Sky Blues were hit by two late
goals.
Barnsley were denied a point on
Saturday when they conceded a last minute goal away at Crystal
Palace.
Their home form, however, has
been their strength and they are unbeaten at Oakwell in the
league this season, winning two games and drawing two.
Tickets for tomorrow night’s
trip are available from the club’s ticket offices priced £16
for adults and £9 for over 65s and under 16s.
Seats for the Worthington Cup
game against Chelsea at Highfield Road on 9 October go on
general sale on Wednesday. Tickets are currently on sale to
season ticket holders, JSBs and other member groups and season
tickets holders are able to purchase their own seats until 6
October.
Several City stars look set to be
involved in the next round of internationals.
Magnus Hedman and Ivan Guerrero
have already had call-ups while Gary Breen could make his
comeback for Ireland when Mick McCarthy names his squad for the
home game with Cyprus on 6 October. Lee Carsley and Barry Quinn
are also expected to be involved.
Bosnia entertain Liechtenstein in
Group 7, and City defender Mo Konjic is expected to earn a
recall after his return to form.
