NOV 00] COVENTRY CITY MATCH
REPORT - WORTHINGTON CUP 4TH ROUND
Ipswich Town (1) 2
Coventry City (0) 1
Coventry
City’s miserable run of form continued last night when they
crashed out of the Worthington Cup at Ipswich Town.
Defensive
errors cost the Sky Blues dear as a mistake by Youssef Chippo, a
shadow of the player he was last season, let central defender
Titus Bramble in to score after five minutes.
Rather
than hoof the ball downfield when he collected it inside the
penalty area, the Moroccan tried to dribble away to safety, and
gifted the ball to town.
He
then improved, and won a penalty during one of his attack runs,
but was later substituted for Moustapha Hadji, who had been
relegated to the bench.
Craig
Bellamy, lacking in confidence and goals since his £6 million
move from Norwich in the summer, scored from the spot after 54
minutes.
Bellamy
and John Eustace both came close with chances, but George
Burley’s team seemed one step ahead of the game, and had
adjusted their tactics to rattle Coventry’s woeful defence.
David
Johnson evaded Paul Williams’ lunging tackle to slot home past
Chris Kirkland on 65 minutes, and nearly added a third with a
header.
Hadji
produced brief moments of trickery, but missed a free header
towards the end of the game that would have taken the tie into
extra time.
