Stars Of The Past Gather To Mark Sky Blues Book Launch
Generations
of Sky Blues stars will be appearing in Coventry on Saturday to
sign up a new book dealing with the history of the club in
pictures.
They
will be lining up to sign copies of the book by Jim Brown in
Waterstone’s in Broadgate.
Among
the group will be Reg Matthews who caused a sensation in 1956 by
being the first Coventry City player picked for England, despite
the team only being in the Third Division South.
At
the end of the season he was sold to Chelsea for £22,000
- then a world record for a goalkeeper.
Also
appearing will be Dietmar Bruck and Brian Hill, who were in
Jimmy Hill’s promotion winning side that got the Sky Blues
into the top flight.
Andy
Blair, who now runs a sports shop at Cannon Park, Danny Thomas
and Dennis Mortimer, who went on to win the European Cup with
Aston Villa will be completing the line-up alongside.
Jim,
the club’s official statistician, said the book includes
snapshots, contracts and memorabilia dating back to Victorian
times.
He
said he has been working on the book, which was published this
week, for nine months.
Jim
said:
“I’m
very pleased that the book’s out and I’m very pleased with
it.
“The
quality of the photos is exceptional. It’s something I’ve
always wanted to do.
”There
was less writing in this book, but I had to make sure the
captions told the story.”
He
added that the book-signing was an ideal opportunity for fans to
meet some of the former stars of the team.
He
said:
“The
club doesn’t do very much with older players apart from the
occasional black tie do – there’s very little for ordinary
fans.
“The
players are quite easy to find if you know where to look.”
The
signing will take place from 11am to 12.30pm. The book,
'Coventry City - An Illustrated History', is published by Desert
Island Books priced £16.99.
