Coventry City face a
desperate start to the season after Peruvian striker Ysrael
Zuniga was stretchered off in a friendly in Belgium last night.
The club faces an
anxious wait to discover the extent of his injuries.
If he is unable to play
at the start of the season it leaves the team with just two
recognised centre-forwards: Cedric Roussell and teenager Jay
Bothroyd.
Moustapha Hadji has
played up front, but John Aaloisi is still recovering from a
long-term injury.
The offending tackle was
made in a pre-season friendly with Roussell’s former club KAA
Gent. Defender Jacky Peeters crunched in on Zuniga in the 69th
minute.
If Zuniga is out of
action for some time then it will force the club to intensify
its search for a new striker since Robbie Keane and Noel Whelan
were sold.
The Sky Blues lost the
game 2-0, with the first goal coming from an indirect free-kick
after the referee said keeper Magnus Hedman had held the ball
for longer than six seconds.
Hadji
played in a new central midfield role alongside Barry Quinn,
with Youssef Chippo on the left and Paul Telfer on the right.
