Hedman Heroics Earns Swedes Draw
Coventry
keeper Magnus Hedman helped his country earn a draw with Spain as
Sweden continued their preparation for Euro 2000.
The
Sky Blues number one braved two encounters with Valencia striker
Mendieta to keep a clean sheet in open play.
The
Spaniards, favoured by many to reach the final, only managed to score
from the penalty spot when Pep Guardiola slotted home in the first
half.
It
was left to former Sky Blues favourite Roland Nilsson to equalise for
the home team, again from the penalty spot.
Nilsson,
making his 111th appearance for his country, left Highfield Road to
return to Sweden last year.
His
replacement, Tomas Gustafsson, made a brief appearance as a substitute
two minutes from time, to keep up his hopes of a regular place in the
Swedish side during the tournament proper.
