Williams Signs As McAllister Ponders Move
Paul
Williams finally made up his mind yesterday and put pen to paper on a
new three year deal at Coventry City.
The
29-year-old centre-back had kept the football club on a string for
months as he debated whether to stay or move on when his contract
expired next month.
The
rumour mill said that Wolverhampton Wanderers were keen to move in to
sign him, but that was ruled out when their board of directors
instructed manager Colin Lee that there was no money available for any
new players - even those on free transfers.
Williams
had agreed to re-sign for Coventry, but then asked for more time to
consider his position. He then went public with a grievance that he
did not feel wanted at the club.
He
said he felt he was always the player to be dropped when a new signing
arrived.
It
came as a surprise therefore when he did an about turn and re-signed
and it would seem he has a few bridges to build when the players
return from their summer break.
Meanwhile
Coventry's skipper Gary McAllister is reportedly close to signing for
Liverpool at the end of his contract next month.
Sources
close to the Anfield club say he has been tempted by a one-year
playing contract with the assurance of a coaching position at the club
at the end of it.
Coventry's
attentions however appear to be concentrating on Central America and
on Honduras in particular.
They
are being firmly linked with the Honduran internationals Ivan Guerrero
and Jairo Martinez.
Guerrero
is a midfielder or full back, while Martinez is a striker.
Their
agent is Marcelo Houseman who says he is 100 per cent certain Martinez
will sign for Coventry, while the decision is left with Guerrero
whether he wants to join the English club.
