SEP 99] COVENTRY CITY FC PRESS RELEASE
Sky Blue CondomsCoventry City today became
the first Premiership club to launch its own official condom.
The Highfield Road club has signed an agreement with a
Leamington-based promotional company to supply specially packaged condoms which will be
sold by vending machines at the ground, across Coventry and also at the two Safeway stores
in the city.
Paul Coles, the clubs Retails Operations Controller,
said the condoms meet all British Standards and EC conformity and were a serious addition
to the clubs range of merchandise.
"This is not a joke product. We were approached by
Vendetta of Leamington and both companies agreed that if we were to supply condoms, they
would not be the joke variety. We are a responsible club.
"We have been very careful to make sure that the
product passes all statutory standards. We are confident of considerable demand."
And the initiative has won the backing of Coventry Health
Authority whose aim is to control sexually transmitted diseases and reduce unwanted
pregnancies through its Health Improvement Programme.
Pam Allen, the authoritys commissioning manager for
sexual health, welcomed the clubs latest merchandise product.
"I have been impressed with professional and
responsible approach to this initiative. While the condoms will be targeted at both sexes
and all ages, it is hoped that this initiative will encourage the purchase and use of
condoms by young men.
"This is of particular interest since the failure to
use condoms is often due to unwillingness of men to use them. CHA is advocating the use of
condoms through its Sexual Health Strategy and invests £60,000 a year in the provision of
free condoms through its service agencies and general practices.
"Coventry City has a very high profile within the area
and hopefully this product will appeal to the sections of the community we have
highlighted."
Damon Harrison, of Vendetta, who have struck the deal with
the club, is confident that condoms will prove popular well beyond the confines of
Highfield Road.
He said:
"The condoms will be on sale from tomorrows
match at the ground and we hope interest will take off from there. The club has a close
link with Safeway which is set to stock the product.
"It wanted assurances that the condoms were a serious
product and is satisfied that they are and that we are approaching the subject
responsibly."
