Jim Brown[17 AUG 99] COVENTRY CITY FC MATCH REPORT
Tottenham Hotspur Reserves 3
Coventry City Reserves 3
BY JIM BROWN

John Eustace, Coventry City FCYoung midfielder John Eustace grabbed an injury time goal to give City Reserves a valuable point in their first ever FA Premier Reserve League match at Clarence Park, St Albans.

City's young team deserved the draw against a very experienced Spurs team which included six players with first team experience including Ruel Fox, Stefan Freund and Luke Young.

Spurs led three times but each time City's kids came back to level matters. Eustace scored twice and gave an impressive all-round display in midfield. Gavin Strachan and Barry Quinn also gave a good account of themselves whilst up front the McPhee brothers, Steve and Gary gave the much vaunted Luke Young and Ledley King a torrid time.

At the back there were solid performances from Gerry Mooney, who kept a tight rein on Fox, and Mo Konjic, who was marking the 6ft 7in Peter Crouch.

Reserve team coach Trevor Peake was facing an old adversary from the 1987 FA Cup final in Chris Hughton, now the Spurs reserve team coach.

On a rain soaked pitch Spurs went in front after 21 minutes when Rafaele Nuzzo tripped Stephen Clemence as he burst through and Clemence got up to beat the Italian keeper from the spot.

City's best chance of an even first half came on the stroke of half time when good work by Strachan saw Sam Shilton cross low and hard for Steve McPhee who was just beaten to the ball with the keeper beaten.

City started to dominate the game after the break and after 62 minutes Eustace equalised from close range after the home side failed to clear a corner. The goal spurred Tottenham into action and set up a hectic last twenty minutes.

On 70 minutes Neale Fenn swivelled in the box to slot home and ten minutes later Steve McPhee scored the best goal of the game - running at the home defence before unleashing an unstoppable shot from the edge of the penalty area. Spurs pressed for the winner and twice Nuzzo had to tip over the bar before a looping header from Fox seemed to have won it, until Eustace's stoppage time header.
