APR 99] COVENTRY CATHEDRAL PRESS RELEASE
Bishop of Coventry to Lead Second Delegation to IraqFollowing the success of Canon Andrew Whites visit in March, the Bishop of
Coventry will be leading a second delegation to Iraq, again at the personal invitation of
Deputy Prime Minister, Tariq Aziz.
The Archbishop of Canterbury has sanctioned this official
delegation, and is sending a representative from the Board of Social Responsibility.
Again, the visit will be humanitarian, and Roland Taylor
from the Flying Hospital will be amongst the visitors. One of Canon Whites
achievements on his last visit was to secure permission for the Flying Hospital to land in
Iraq and to work with the medical professionals there.
Bishop Colin and Canon Andrew White will also be joined by
Bishop Clive Handford, the Bishop of Cyprus and the Gulf, who has been unable to reach
this part of his diocese for many years. The Bishop of Kingston-upon-Thames will also be
part of the delegation.
As before, Canon White is aware of the risks that they are
taking, but after the channels of communication were opened by his previous visit, feels
this will further help the disastrous situation faced by the ordinary people of Iraq.
The delegation will be going to Iraq, via Amman, on 3 May,
and will return on 10 May.
