Warwick To Get Weekly Antique Market
Warwick could
be getting a regular antiques market – to add to the general
event on Saturdays and monthly farmers market.
Warwick
District Council is considering the idea of a sale of antiques
every Tuesday in the Market Place, which was refurbished this
year a blaze of publicity.
Nuneaton is the
nearest town to offer a weekly antique market sale.
Joe Baconnet,
town centre manager for Warwick said:
“Warwick is
a natural town to have a regular antiques markets given the
amount of local activity, existing tourism base and access to
national transport infrastructure.
“The
revised market place layout gives the opportunity to have a
new market without the need for street closures.
“Although
there is the potential to establish a weekly year-round
antiques on The Square, the initial objective will be to
establish a successful monthly market in the town as a
platform to build on.”
Research by the
Warwick Chamber of Trade shows a large number of visitors are
attracted by the antiques trade, and suggests that is worth
about £5 million to the town each year.
There is likely
to be a marquee to house the event, which could run weekly from
Easter to October next year to coincide with better weather.
General markets
are held weekly in Leamington, Warwick and Kenilworth.
These have been
supplemented in all three towns by monthly farmers markets, and
then an annual French Market (later rebranded a Continental
Market) in the current craze for outdoor sales.
