FEB 99] STRATFORD ON AVON DISTRICT COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
Flood Costs PaymentAlmost a year after the
worst floods in living memory, Stratford District Council has received compensation from
the government for costs incurred in dealing with the emergency. The council has received
a payment of £36,428 from the Department of the Environment, Transport and Regions (DETR)
under the 'Bellwin scheme'.
"I am pleased that some of the Council's costs in
dealing with the terrible floods have now been reimbursed by the DETR, but disappointed it
has taken so long" said Cllr Susan Juned, the District Council Leader.
"Although the sum is significantly less than we had
originally applied for, it will nevertheless help offset some of £65,000 which we spent.
"Many people in the Stratford District were badly
affected by the floods last Easter, and this council did everything it could to offer help
wherever possible.
"During such an emergency, the last thing we ever
think about is how much it is going to cost, but at the end of the day it all has to be
paid for."
Under the Bellwin scheme the council is eligible for grant
of 85%, after deducting a threshold of £21,000. The actual claim of £65,456 results in a
grant of £36,428.
