NOV 98] STRATFORD ON AVON DISTRICT COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
Public Meeting For New Art GalleryIn 1996
Stratford District Council were awarded £18,000 from the National Lottery to transform
the concourse area of Stratford Leisure & Visitor Centre into an art gallery.
The aim of the gallery is to show both touring and local
work and to be a centre of information and activity for visual arts.
"I hope the gallery will be recognised as a venue for
innovative and challenging work and that it will be a source of inspiration to local and
regional arts activity as well as providing the community with a place to show their work
and promote local artists,"
says Councillor Geoff Freeman, Chairman of the District
Council's Community Services Committee.
"Creating the gallery in a non traditional venue
allows the arts to be more accessible and will attract new audiences. The gallery will be
a source of information on the arts for residents of the district and visitors
alike."
The development of the gallery is still at an early stage
and the first physical changes to the space are about to take place. The public meeting is
being held to give people the opportunity to share their views and to hear more about the
gallery.
