OCT 98] STRATFORD ON AVON DISTRICT COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
Tredington By-ElectionThe Conservative
Party has retained the Tredington seat in the Stratford District Council ward in south
Warwickshire. The by-election was held as a result of the resignation of John Saunders
(Con) in August.
Christopher John Saint (Con) is the new District Councillor
for Tredington, polling 441 votes in yesterday's by-election. The Liberal Democrat
candidate, Mary Hart polled 308 votes. The turnout for the by-election was 36.64% out of
an electorate of 2,044.
In May 1996 John Saunders had won the seat with a majority
of 29 over the Lib Dem candidate, Mary Hart. Cllr Saint will now hold the seat until May
2000.
The political composition of Stratford District Council
therefore remains the same as after this year's May elections, with no political group in
overall control: Lib Dems 23 seats, Cons 18 seats, Ind 9 seats, Lab 5 seats.
There was also a by-election for a parish council seat
yesterday in Great Wolford, south of Shipston. Deidre Thompson, a retired teacher won the
seat, after the previous councillor resigned. The turnout for this by-election was 45.29%.
