Tourism Devastated By Foot And Mouth
Tourism
in south Warwickshire has been decimated by the foot and mouth
outbreak, and visitors are being urged to return to the area.
While
some parts of the countryside are off-limits, other areas are
safe, but have suffered from a wave of cancellations following the
spread of the disease.
Businesses
that have been hit by the effects of the outbreak have been
promised help by Stratford District Council.
Business
ratepayers who rely on tourism are being told to get in touch if
they are having problems paying their bill.
There
has been a big reduction in visitor numbers and bookings, and many
firms are bracing themselves for a difficult year.
Cllr
Chris Saint, the chairman of the district council's management
committee, said:
“Although
no cases have as yet been reported in this area, hotels,
guesthouses, restaurants, pubs, shops and other businesses are
suffering badly because fewer people are staying in the
district.
"The
council can consider granting hardship relief to many small
businesses having to rely on visitors to this area, or even a
reduction in the business rates in certain circumstances.
"However,
I would also like to stress that visits to the countryside are
not banned.
“Many
attractions, including stately homes and historic buildings are
open, as are the theatres, pubs, restaurants and cafes. Although
most footpaths are currently closed, some may open soon."
Any
businesses wishing to contact the council for guidance on paying
their bill should contact the revenues division on 01789 260990.
