FEB 00] STRATFORD ON AVON DISTRICT COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
Option To Buy Park-and-Ride SiteProspects for a new park-and-ride facility in Stratford-upon-Avon
have moved a step closer, with the district council having secured an option to buy 45
acres of land on the outskirts of the town.
Stratford-on-Avon District Council has signed an agreement
which gives it two years to decide whether to purchase part of the Wildmoor estate, just
off the A46 trunk road west of the town. As part of the agreement the council must apply
for planning permission for a park-and-ride facility on the site, and possibly a number of
other uses too.
Next month the council's Management Committee will be asked
to approve the appointment of planning consultants, to prepare and submit a detailed
planning application for the proposals. Although the project is a council scheme, it must
still be considered for planning permission by the relevant committee as with any other
development.
The potential of the site was identified by the council
last year and since then it has been negotiating with the owners on the option agreement.
If the proposals for a 750 space park-and-ride are accepted, the project will cost some
£2m over the next 3 years.
One of the district council's aims is to ease congestion
and minimise the adverse environmental impacts of transport. It is hoped that the
provision of a new park-and-ride at Wildmoor will significantly contribute towards the
sustainability of the town centre.
