SEP 99] STRATFORD ON AVON DISTRICT COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
Bowls In Fenny ComptonA
new sports club is due to start next week, aiming to bring the tension, adrenaline and
buzz of competitive spirit to a south Warwickshire village.
Perhaps not quite as dynamic as formula one racing, short
mat bowls is nevertheless proving increasingly popular, with the new Fenny Compton Short
Mat Bowls Group being the latest addition to a growing number of clubs in the area.
The group will meet for the first time on Tuesday 21
September in Fenny Compton village hall, with weekly meetings scheduled to start at
7.30pm. The cost will be £1 per session and it will be open to everyone who would like to
play bowls.
Stratford District Council has provided support in setting
up the Fenny Compton group, with the loan of equipment, instructors, advice on funding and
help with promotional material. Further information of the new group is available from
John Unitt on 01295 770349.
Earlier this year the second short mat bowls tournament
took place at Stratford's community sports centre with a record 23 teams taking part, many
of which also took part in the first Stratford district short mat bowls league last year.
The district council has also helped many of the clubs in
the league, and since 1994, 15 short mat bowl clubs have been set up with council support.
