Walk Re-opens Despite Foot And Mouth Fears

A
popular nature reserve has been re-opened so dog walkers can exercise
their pets.
The
Grand Central Way in Rugby has been re-opened by the borough council
following discussions with local farmers and the Ministry of
Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
It
was closed on 6 March in response to the outbreaks of foot and mouth
disease.
Officials
have decided to re-open some parts of the way to allow those in urban
areas to exercise the dogs.
The
parts of the Great Central Way which run alongside farms will remain
closed, and members of the public are being urged to stay away from
these taped-off sections.
The
details of which sections are open are:
- Pytchley
Road to the Southern end – closed
- Pytchley
Road to South Street – open
- North
of the mainline station and canal to Staveley Way, South –
closed
- Staveley
Way, South, South – Newton Manor Lane
- open
- Newton
Manor lane –Newton – open
Newbold
Quarry Park is open, but the canal towpath remains closed.
Cllr
Steve Stewart, leader of the council, said:
“The
council has taken a balanced approach to the Great Central Walk,
attempting to meet the needs of local people whilst protecting the
local farming community as far as possible.”
