Walk Re-opens Despite Foot And Mouth Fears
By ANTONY HOPKER

A popular nature reserve has been re-opened so dog walkers can exercise their pets.

The Grand Central Way in Rugby has been re-opened by the borough council following discussions with local farmers and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

It was closed on 6 March in response to the outbreaks of foot and mouth disease.

Officials have decided to re-open some parts of the way to allow those in urban areas to exercise the dogs.

The parts of the Great Central Way which run alongside farms will remain closed, and members of the public are being urged to stay away from these taped-off sections.

The details of which sections are open are:

  • Pytchley Road to the Southern end – closed
  • Pytchley Road to South Street – open
  • North of the mainline station and canal to Staveley Way, South – closed
  • Staveley Way, South, South – Newton Manor Lane  - open
  • Newton Manor lane –Newton – open

Newbold Quarry Park is open, but the canal towpath remains closed.

Cllr Steve Stewart, leader of the council, said:

“The council has taken a balanced approach to the Great Central Walk, attempting to meet the needs of local people whilst protecting the local farming community as far as possible.”
