Rugby Tower Block Rumours Demolished
By ANTONY HOPKER
Council
bosses in Rugby have scotched rumours that five tower blocks in the
town are to be demolished.
They
say they are mystified about gossip that Biart Place and Rounds
Gardens are to be razed to the ground.
Millions
of pounds have been spent in recent years on improving the 300 flats,
and a £500,000 concierge scheme in Rounds Gardens is currently being
installed.
But
rumours have been circulating the town that the flats, which make up
around ten per cent of the council’s housing stock, are to be
bulldozed.
Cllr
Chris Holman, cabinet member (Housing and Environment), said:
“These
rumours are simply untrue. The council has dedicated a great deal of
time and resources to improve the quality of life of tenants at
these two communities. They are safer and more secure than ever
before.
“At
Biart Place a 24-hour concierge scheme has been in place for more
than 18 months with CCTV and high-security door entry systems.
“Improvements
to the site’s car parking areas has reduced vandalism and
anti-social behaviour.
“Similar
improvements are in the process of being introduced at Rounds
Gardens.”
Paul
Barnes, Head of Housing Management, said the rumours had been picked
up from people looking for council houses.
He
said some people had turned down a flat in the 1960s flats because
they believed they were shortly to be demolished.
