Warwick
& Leamington sees welcome fall in youth employment and long term unemployment.
Local figures for the New Deal show that over the last year in the Warwick &
Leamington constituency, 20 young people, previously unemployed for over six months,
gained work. The over-25 and out of work for more that six months total now stands at just
95.
Also, over the last year, 31 over-25s, who had been out of work for two years or more,
have found employment, thanks to the New Deal. The number in this category still without
work now totals 188.
Commenting on the figures, James Plaskitt MP said,
"These reductions on unemployment are very welcome, and it is good to see the New
Deal programme delivering results locally. The numbers finding work through the programme
might not sound large, but thats because we have very low levels of unemployment
locally. Over the country as a whole, 40,000 young people have found work through the New
Deal, and over 140,000 are still going through the New Deal gateway."
Unemployment in Warwick & Leamington has fallen steadily since the general election
of May 1997 and now stands at just over 2%.
