MP Escapes Charges Over Grant Claims
Coventry
MP Geoffrey Robinson has escaped criminal charges over allegations
that his firm TransTec misused government grants.
An
investigation by the West Midlands fraud squad has concluded that
there is insufficient evidence to prosecute any individual or company
over the affair.
It
had been claimed that grants of £500,000 made by the Department of
Trade and Industry made to the company, then called Transfer
Technology, between 1986 and 1989.
Mr
Robinson, MP for Coventry North West since 1974, said he was
“pleased but not surprised at the findings”.
But
police are still looking at the collapse of TransTec last December and
allegations that Ford had a claim of £12m against the firm two days
before the accounts were signed off by Mr Robinson in April 1997.
Mr
Robinson is publishing his memoirs “An Unconventional Minister”
soon, which covers the period that led to him leaving his position as
Paymaster General in the government.
