Blair In CoventryPrime Minister Tony Blair
received a mixed reaction from an audience of 800 Labour Party supporters in Coventry last
night.
The Labour leader, on his first visit to the city
since his election, was welcomed with a standing ovation at the Labour rally at the
Central Methodist Hall. But he came under fire during the one and a half hour question and
answer session from one of the old guard left wingers in the audience.
The Premier's critic shouted from the back of the hall for
Government intervention to protect the jobs of 250 Alvis workers threatened by merger
plans. He responded that the jobs could be safeguarded by a new Government scheme to
tackle unemployment, but stressed his party would not intervene in any commercial decision
by the armoured car maker to quit the city.
