[25 MAR 99] COVENTRY CITY COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
Extra Money To Make Four Coventry Roads Safer

On Monday 29 March the Environment and Transportation Policy Team look set to give the go ahead to four new road safety schemes that will help to cut the number of raod accidents in Coventry.

Work on the four roads – Purcell Road, Brade Drive, St James Lane/London Road and Northumberland Road could start as soon as autumn this year and will begin with the design of detailed schemes which could include traffic claming, anti skid surfacing and speed humps.

Although none of the four roads meet the current criteria for funding under the local safety scheme budget (6 accidents in 3 years at specific locations), the work has been made possible thanks to money specifically set-a-side by the City Council for road safety schemes that address issues of perceived safety – that’s where people think there is a problem or cause for concern.

Commenting on the first phase of work, Councillor John McNicholas Chair of the Environment and Transportation Policy Team said,

"Road safety comes high on everyone’s agenda including the City Council’s and I am pleased to say that we have found an extra £100,000 to undertake a series of schemes that will respond to real needs that have been brought to our attention by ward Councillors and local people. The schemes will make a real difference to people’s lives and the first four will begin in the autumn with more to follow later in the year. In the meantime any other requests or petitions that we receive will be added to the list for investigation."

NOTES

Over the last three years the Environment and Transportation Policy Team have received a number of petitions requesting traffic calming, new crossings etc. Those that have not been actioned already, through lack of resources, have been analysed to determine a ranking.

The ranking resulted in the following list of schemes to be considered for funding from the perceived safety schemes pot:

Road / Junction No of accidents in 3 years
Jardine Cres *
Far Gosford Street *
Spon End / Hearsall Lane *
Jobs Lane *
Purcell Road (whole length) 8
Brade Drive 3
Widdrington Road / Sandy Lane 3
London Road / St James Lane 1
Dillotford Avenue 1
Northumberland Road 1
Henley Mill Lane 1
Goring Road 1
Belgrave Estate 0
Yarningdale Road 0
Somerset 0
Recreation Road 0

*The accident history at the four sites at the top of the list means that they will be investigated within the context of the local safety scheme package.
